Privacy Policy
Cornerpiece is a jigsaw-puzzle tracker published by Beyond Better Studio ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the Cornerpiece app and website collect, where it is kept, who can see it, and the choices you have. If you have a question, email support@beyondbetterstudio.com.
The short version
- We collect what the app needs to work: your account, your puzzle collection and anything you choose to share with the community.
- Your photos stay on your device unless you post them. Box photos are never uploaded.
- No ads today, no third-party analytics, no tracking across other apps or websites, and we don't sell your data.
- You can delete your account and its data from inside the app at any time.
1. Information we collect
Your account
To use Cornerpiece you create an account with an email address and password, or sign in with Apple or Google (Google sign-in is offered on the website). We receive your email address and, if the provider shares it, your name. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we receive Apple's private relay address instead. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and stored only in hashed form; we never see them. If you sign in with Apple in the iPhone app, we also store a token from Apple on our server; its only use is to tell Apple to unlink Cornerpiece from your Apple ID when you delete your account.
Your profile
Your profile has a display name, an @handle, an optional short bio and a profile color you choose. There is no profile picture upload. Your profile (name, handle, bio, color) is public.
Your puzzle collection
So that your shelf is the same on every device, we store your collection in your account: the puzzles you own, want or used to own, details you enter (such as price paid, store, purchase date, number of copies and notes), puzzling sessions and times, ratings and reviews, favorites, showcases, and app settings such as your shopping region. This copy is private to your account.
Your public shelf
Cornerpiece is a social app. A summary of your shelf is shared with other signed-in Cornerpiece users and kept up to date automatically: which puzzles you have finished, have on your shelf, are working on or are open to swapping, your favorites, recent finishes and totals (such as puzzles finished, pieces placed and hours puzzled). Demo puzzles from the sample shelf are never shared.
- Private profile (Profile → Community) hides your shelf, finished list, stats and swap list from other users.
- Even with a private profile, your profile, posts, comments, public showcases, ratings and reviews, and speed-run entries remain visible to other signed-in users.
Things you choose to share
- Posts about a finished puzzle or a showcase, with an optional caption, your finished photo, up to four progress photos and, if you choose, a timelapse video.
- Comments and kudos on posts, and follows. Who follows whom is visible to signed-in users.
- Ratings and reviews: when you rate a puzzle, the rating, your review text and your finishing time are shared on that puzzle's page and count toward its average rating.
- Public showcases: collections you mark as public.
- Speed runs: if you submit a finish to a puzzle's "Fastest finishes" leaderboard, we store your time, session and frame counts and the timelapse video as proof. We may review submitted videos and remove entries that don't hold up.
- Swaps: swap requests, replies and swap chat messages are visible only to the two people in the swap.
- Reports and blocks: reports you file are seen only by us, for moderation. The list of people you block is visible only to you.
Photos are downscaled and re-encoded on your device before upload, which removes embedded metadata such as location. Uploaded photos and videos are stored in a public file store: anyone who has the direct link to a file can open it.
Notifications
Daily session reminders in the iPhone app are scheduled on your phone itself; turning them on sends nothing to us.
We keep in-app notifications about activity that involves you (kudos, comments, follows and swap updates). If you turn on phone notifications for a device, we store that device's push subscription: the push address issued by your browser, its encryption keys, the platform and the browser's user-agent string. Notifications are delivered through your browser's push service (for example Apple, Google or Mozilla). You can turn them off at any time, and signing out stops them on that device.
Barcode lookups
When you scan a barcode that isn't in our catalog, and "Look up unknown barcodes" is on (it is on by default; Profile → Settings), only the barcode number is sent to our server, which may ask the product database UPCitemdb about it. We log the barcode with your account to prevent abuse of the service. Product details we find are saved to a shared catalog without any information about you.
Emails and support
We send account emails (confirming your address, password resets, email changes). If you contact us, we keep your message and email address to answer you.
Technical data
Like any website, our hosting and database providers receive basic request data such as your IP address, device and browser type, and request times, which they use to deliver the service and keep it secure.
2. Information that stays on your device
- Photos. Box photos, progress photos and finished photos are saved on your device only and do not sync between devices. A finished photo and up to four progress photos are uploaded only when you choose to post a finish. Box photos are never uploaded.
- Timelapses. Timelapse frames are captured and stored on your device, and the video is made on your device. A video is uploaded only if you choose to post it or submit it as a speed run.
- Camera. The camera is used to scan barcodes, take puzzle photos and record timelapses. Barcodes are read on your device, and camera images are not sent anywhere unless you choose to post them.
- Shopping region. To show stores near you, the app guesses your region from your device's time zone and language, on your device. We do not use GPS or ask for your location. You can change the region in Settings; your choice is saved with your collection.
- Device preferences such as theme, language, haptics, sort order and the phone-notifications switch.
- Exports. CSV exports and backups you create are files you control; we don't receive them.
3. How we use information
- To run Cornerpiece: sign you in, sync your collection, show your shelf and community activity, and deliver notifications you asked for.
- To keep the community safe: enforce limits, review reports and speed-run entries, and act on our Terms of Use.
- To answer support requests and send account emails.
We do not use your information for advertising or profiling, and we do not sell or rent it.
4. Ads, analytics and tracking
Cornerpiece currently shows no ads and contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. If we add advertising in the future, we will update this policy and tell you in the app before it starts, and we will ask your permission before any tracking where the law or your device requires it. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we don't share your information with data brokers.
5. Links to stores and other websites
"Where to buy" links open retailers' and brands' own websites (for example Amazon, Target, Walmart or eBay) with a search for the puzzle. Once you open one, that site's own privacy policy applies. "Nearby" links open Google search or Google Maps, which may use your location under Google's policies. Some store links may include an affiliate tag (for example Amazon Associates), which can earn us a commission on purchases; it does not give the store any personal information from Cornerpiece.
Puzzle box images are loaded from brand and retailer image servers, and the 3D box viewer loads a graphics library from a public content network (cdnjs). Those servers receive basic request data such as your IP address.
6. Service providers
We use a small number of providers to run Cornerpiece. They process data on our behalf, only to provide their service:
- Supabase: database, sign-in, file storage for community photos and videos, and server functions.
- Cloudflare: website hosting and delivery.
- Apple and Google: sign-in, only if you choose them.
- Resend: delivery of account emails.
- Browser push services (for example Apple, Google or Mozilla): delivering phone notifications you turned on.
- UPCitemdb: product lookups, receiving only a barcode number.
These providers may process data in the United States and other countries. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a transfer of the app to a new owner, who would remain bound by this policy.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. Posts, comments and other content you delete are removed when you delete them. When you delete your account, the data described in section 8 is deleted. Copies may remain in our providers' routine backups for a limited time before they are overwritten.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app: open your Profile, tap the gear (Settings), scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account, then type DELETE to confirm. This permanently deletes your account, profile, synced collection, posts and their photos and videos, comments, kudos, follows, ratings and reviews, showcases, swap requests and messages, speed runs, notifications and push registrations. It also removes your account's photos from the device you delete it on. Photos saved on your other devices stay there until you remove them or uninstall the app. If you can't access the app, email us and we'll help.
9. Your choices and rights
- See and export your data: in your Profile, use Export puzzles (CSV) or Export backup.
- Correct it: edit your profile, puzzles and entries in the app.
- Limit sharing: make your profile private, don't post, turn off barcode lookups, block people.
- Delete it: delete individual posts and comments, or your whole account.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as to access, correct, delete or port your data, or to object to or restrict certain processing. Email support@beyondbetterstudio.com and we will respond within the time the law requires. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
10. Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Database access rules ensure each account can only read and change what it is allowed to. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and tell us if you notice anything wrong.
11. Children
Cornerpiece is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the effective date above, and for significant changes we will let you know in the app before they take effect.
